SENATOR

Kevin Hertel is serving his first term in the Michigan Senate, where he is focused on putting aside political games, finding common ground and delivering solutions for his lakeshore community. In the Senate, Hertel has championed policies to lower costs for seniors and working families, keep Michigan communities safe, expand educational opportunities for students and more.

Hertel’s Senate District runs along the shoreline of Lake St. Clair — from Grosse Pointe to Harsens Island.  Knowing how important the lake is to the health of local residents and businesses, Hertel has fought to secure $92 million during his time in the Michigan Legislature for critical projects that address aging water infrastructure.

As Chair of the Senate Health Policy Committee, Hertel introduced legislation to codify the most popular provisions of the Affordable Care Act into state law — protecting access to healthcare for Michiganders across the state. He continues to advocate for policies that will expand access to behavioral healthcare and lower the cost of health insurance and prescription drugs.

Before his time in the Michigan Senate, Hertel was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 2016-2022 where he fought on a bipartisan basis to keep Michigan’s children safe from abuse and neglect.

He lives in St. Clair Shores with his wife, Ann, and their two children.
