SENATOR

State Senator Darrin Camilleri is currently serving his first term in Michigan’s State Senate, after serving three successful terms in the state house where he was one of the youngest members in state history. In the Senate, he holds the position of Assistant Majority Leader and chairs the PreK-12 School Aid Budget. He also serves as Vice-Chair of Labor and is a member of the Appropriations, Energy, and Transportation committees, among others. His district includes seventeen communities within Downriver and Western Wayne County, including his hometown of Brownstown Township, and the City of Trenton, where he lives with his wife.

Darrin, who comes from a family of immigrants and union auto workers, has seen firsthand both the challenges and opportunities that Michigan families are met while pursuing the American Dream. That is why he has used his time in the legislature to elevate voices often sidelined in Lansing. From helping lead the effort to repeal Michigan’s so-called “right-to-work” law to , protecting a woman’s right to choose and serving as a fierce advocate our public education system, Darrin has always put working families first.

As one of the youngest members of the Senate, Darrin has also focused on Michigan’s future, voting to pass historic environmental legislation and fighting for needed infrastructure improvements that will benefit Michigan for decades. Darrin has accomplished this through a healthy optimism and belief that despite the growing narrative around our politics, government can do good when the right people are in the room making decisions on both sides of the aisle.

For his work in the State Senate, Darrin has been recognized by numerous organizations, receiving AFL-CIO’s 2023 Legislator of the Year Award; The Council of State Governments’ 20 Under 40 Award in 2023; and The 2023 DON Rhythm of Change Award, among others.

During his time in the House, Camilleri was awarded Progress Michigan’s Legislator of the Year in 2017, was recognized as one of Crain’s Detroit’s 20 in their 20s, and was given the Michigan Association for Media in Education’s 2018’s Outstanding Legislator Award for his work as House Education Committee Vice-Chair and working to expand access to school libraries.

A first-generation college graduate, Sen. Camilleri earned his bachelor’s degree from Kalamazoo College. After college, Darrin worked as a high school social studies teacher in Southwest Detroit before being elected to the State House and Senate. He and his wife, Lama, live in Trenton.
