Michigan is a state defined by its natural environment and geography arguably more than any other place in the world. As the Great Lakes State, we are known for our woods and waters and the tourism and recreation opportunities that abound within them. But our natural resources are coming under threat more and more each day, from thirsty states eyeing our water and big industry polluters that taint our air, ground and water with noxious chemicals to our Canadian neighbors who continue to use Michigan as their landfill. Senate Democrats have and will continue to be guardians of the land and water we all depend on and battle to protect them for generations to come.

·           Senate Democrats support the passage of a compact between the Great Lakes states and Canada that will monitor large-scale water withdrawals and regulate usage of Great Lakes water to ensure protection of our most valued natural resource for years to come.

·           Senate Democrats have fought to ensure the protection of our land, air, and water from pollution that could destroy our unique natural heritage. We have worked to prevent groundwater and soil pollution and hold violators accountable so that our tourism industry continues to flourish and our children and grandchildren will be able to enjoy this state for years to come.

·           We don't need anyone dumping on Michigan. For years Canadians have shipped their trash over our borders, and Senate Democrats are working hard to keep out-of-state trash out of our landfills.
